In this video, M. R. Hari introduces Dr Shoshamma Iypes memoir Vechur Cow: A New Lease of Life which gives a first-person account of the battles she waged to bring back Keralas indigenous species of cattle, the Vechur cow, from the brink of extinction. The odds she fought were formidable, especially the vicious opposition of vested interests that sought to create a market for foreign and hybrid species. Hari acknowledges that the Vechur cows dung, extraordinarily rich in micro-organisms, has played a positive role in fertilizing the seedbed of the Miyawaki forests at Puliyarakonam.
