In this video, M. R. Hari takes a look at the one-year-old Miyawaki forest at Munakkal beach, planted under the aegis of K-DISC. The forest showed an extraordinary growth rate until a sea surge and consequent saline water-logging damaged two species – the burflower and the jack. The rest of the trees however showed exceptional resilience. The lessons learnt from the experience are that: one, a fringe-belt of water-tolerant trees will protect the Miyawaki forest within; and two, a raised mound, on which to set the seed bed, will prevent any water-logging in the event of a sea surge.
