People usually raise doubts regarding the area needed to create a Miyawaki forest. Truth is, we don’t need specific dimensions to develop a forest. It is said that to build a forest in a city, considering all requirements, at least 1000 sq. ft or 100 sq. meter or two and a half cents is required. But we saw many smaller forest models in Japan. One of Miyawaki’s afforestation projects at a temple near Hadano was developed 12 or 13 years ago. It is spread out over an area of about 13 acres. The forest is optimized to allow visitors to walk through a special path that leads right to the temple. The water that serves this area flows down like a river. This was done using a wide variety of trees, construction techniques, and forest models.
Two things stood out in this construction. One was the parking lot. Trees were planted in a semi-circular pattern so as to provide shade to all the 200 cars that were parked there. A solar station and a gas station were also available nearby. There was a small forest in front of it which was 10 ft wide, stretching to around 20 ft in length. The space around it is designed as a footpath, which allows visitors to walk around the forest. This was an exciting model in which smaller forests were created around the main one.
