A beautiful leaf beetle adds to the charm of our micro-forest at Puliyarakonam. The oval-shaped and short-legged insects belong to the family Chrysomelidae, which contains over 35,000 beetle species. They are entirely herbivorous and like living in leaf and plant litter in wooded areas. Most of these colorful beings are less than 12 mm in length, and they are famous in many parts of the world as voracious leaf eaters. They are found around cultivated plants but are known to naturalize with their surroundings in a short time eventually. This sighting is an excellent sign of the rising biodiversity of this once barren land.
