Attracted by the features of the huge funnel-shaped fish tank (its diameter is 10 feet), designed by Dr K. G. Padmakumar, formerly of Kerala Agricultural University, we have installed one at the top of the hill of the Puliyarakonam plot. The unique shape helps collect fish droppings at the bottom of the pool from where it is siphoned off to different parts of the forests. Apart from keeping the water clean, and thus ensuring the health of the fish and providing manure to plants, this structure allows the working of a cost-effective irrigation system. A few varieties of indigenous fish have been grown and harvested over the months. Thus, in our own way, we contribute our mite towards conserving the fish wealth of the locality.
