In this video, M. R. Hari describes how he accidentally came across the Miyawaki Model of Afforestation. For close to a dozen years, every attempt at afforestation at his Puliyarakonam plot, situated 12 km from Thiruvananthapuram city, had ended disastrously. All the saplings, planted during the rains, would grow for a year, and then die due to drought. Sourcing water in his high-level plot also posed a huge challenge. Eventually, he decided to experiment with the Miyawaki Model. With the help of Dr Mathew Dan, Mr Cherian Mathew and Prof. V. K. Damodaran, Hari set up a Miyawaki forest in a three-cent plot. The astonishing rate of growth and the viability of the model eventually made him take on the mission of propagating and setting up Miyawaki forests wherever possible.
