In this video, M. R. Hari explains how a Miyawaki afforestation experiment in a marshy area taught him certain valuable lessons. After an initial spurt of growth, the forest thinned drastically. On investigation, Hari felt it was caused by two reasons: one, lack of proper attention; and two, the digging of canals close to the forest site which caused the draining of water and made it dry. To repair the damage, wet cow dung was added, and thick mulch laid on the ground to prevent evaporation. Hari hopes these measures will prove effective.
